Stress is the number one cause of disease. An amazing amount of research has been done that proves that chemical reactions in your body caused by stress lead to many illnesses. So, if you can manage your stress levels you are on your way to being healthy.
Illnesses like obesity, heart disease, depression, uncontrolled weight-loss can all point back to stress levels in your life.
But what causes stress in the first place? I believe it is our inability to step-back and make an effort to relax. Yes, we must examine how we process issues that cause stress in our lives but that requires that we relax first then we may be in a better position to deal with issues in a way that is calm and clear.
People assume that medication or expensive massages will reduce stress, but there are lots of things you can do to reduce stress without breaking the bank. Simple things like walking in the park or the gardens in my case can take your stress levels down and your body and mind can begin to settle.
Nature
I love nature and your should too! Nature has healing powers and we should love it and use it to our advantage. Countless studies have been made that link nature to overall mental and physical health. Whether you like to swim, run, walk, hike, bike you will get benefits in nature.
Part of why I love walking in nature is that I get instant benefits. I get moderate exercise (depending on the nature of the trail (inclines and declines). My mental state because jovial and happy. I feel better about everything which is good to prevent depression.
Also, nature is very beautiful. There are benefits to being in beautiful spaces. Have you ever walked into a beautiful house or office or building and felt great because the space is beautiful? I notice it all the time. That is because when we feel great about our surrounding we also feel great about ourselves. Nature has that effect.
Most of us we are raised to overlook benefits of what is available freely and the nature that surrounds us. It costs nothing and it is available for everyone to use. So, next time you are feeling down and need to destress go into nature and enjoy yourself.
When I found out I was pregnant at sixteen I was in a hospital and had just woken up from a train accident I had two days before. I could not believe that I was pregnant; I was in total shock. Looking back now I did not spend even an ounce of energy thinking about how bad my situation was and how hard life was about to become for me; I thought about how I could make this work. Having grown up in abject poverty and apartheid era violence, surviving was ingrained in me and the total sum of my experiences had prepared me for the moment. I knew that I had to dig deep in me to find the strength to realize my goals. At sixteen, I was not ready to be a mother and finding out I was pregnant could have derailed my life. Instead of letting the situation take me off my path, I did what I've always done with any situation: I took the lessons I could use and moved forward. Before I found out I was pregnant I was a member of the Student Representative Council in our school, a member of ...
